Maxcom up for grabs?

Mexican alternative operator Maxcom is reportedly up for sale, according to Bloomberg, which claims that according to two people with knowledge of the situation the telco is seeking bids from the likes of European telecoms giants Telefonica and France Telecom. It is believed that Barclays Capital is currently running an auction process for Maxcom, although it has refused to confirm whether this is the case, as the process is not public. With other possible bidders for the company likely to include local competitors such as Megacable, Axtel, Alestra and Grupo Televisa, the report claims that Maxcom will look for offers next month, with any deal thought to be worth in excess of USD133 million, the current market value of the company.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Maxcom was awarded Mexico's first competitive local and long-distance telephony concession in February 1997, initially covering the Federal District of Mexico and the Gulf region, and today offers retail and wholesale local, domestic and international long-distance (DLD and ILD) telephony, dial-up and broadband internet access, VoIP, public telephony, data and value added services, mainly in and around Mexico City, Puebla, Queretaro and Toluca.
