Nigeria needs more base stations |
23 April. 2012 |
The chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo stated the country has too few base stations given the size of its population, TeleGeography CommsUpdate reported. At the end of 2011 there were approximately 20,000 base stations in Nigeria serving a population of more than 150 million people, but Adebayo has called for operators to increase this number to around 75,000 to meet Quality of Service (QoS) mandates laid down by the regulator. Speaking at a consultation forum organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Adebayo cited the example of the United Kingdom, where approximately 55,000 sites serve a population of more than 60 million people. |
