Aquiva introduces VoIP to Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwean WiMAX operator Aquiva Wireless has launched its first commercial VoIP services, allowing users to access voice services via a broadband Internet connection, TeleGeography CommsUpdate reported.

The firm signed an interconnect agreement with mobile operator Econet Wireless, TechZim reported. It is seeking similar agreements with cellular operators Telecel and NetOne, plus fixed line incumbent TelOne.

According to TechZim, the Zimbabwe telecoms regulator POTRAZ has approved VoIP tariffs of USD0.06 per minute for on-net calls and USD0.12 per minute for off-net calls; GSM operators NetOne, Econet and Telecel all charge a minimum of USD0.23 per minute.
