Greece spectrum auction planned

26 Jan. 2011

The mobile frequencies that Vodafone Greece and Wind Hellas use for GSM services will be auctioned later this year, according to the National Telecommunications & Post Commission (EETT).

According to the commission, a sale of four 2x5MHz blocks of 900MHz spectrum under new 15-year licenses will take place in the fall. The relevant concessions of Vodafone and Wind (each consisting of 2x10MHz in the 900MHz band) run out in September 2012, and they must take part in the competitive tender to renew their rights.

Vodafone Greece holds an additional 2x5MHz in the 900MHz band, which does not expire until August 2016.

Both companies also hold GSM-1800 spectrum concessions (valid until August 2016) and 3G 2100MHz licenses running until 2021, according to TeleGeography CommsUpdate.
